The Sounds Outside The Door 2024

The Sounds Outside The Door / 2024
Memories, sounds.
Scenes I encountered when I lived in Jugong Apartments as a child.
This installation art piece is composed of multiple mailboxes connected to form a large ring. Inside each mailbox, a sound device is installed, and as viewers pass by the mailboxes, various sounds of daily life are played. This piece reflects the living environment of Korean apartments, where people appear to live in the same space but each emits their own unique sounds of life.
The artist conceived this work based on their childhood experience of living in a public housing apartment. Each mailbox symbolizes a household, and the unique sounds from each household draw attention. The piece aims to convey the message that, although people may seem to live in identical apartments, each one contains different sounds and stories of life.
Through this artwork, viewers can experience the diverse sounds emanating from the mailboxes, realizing that each sound forms a small world of its own. The sounds of washing dishes, TV noise, conversations between grandparents, and the crying and laughter of children all originate from different homes. This reminds us that even within the same structure, various lives exist.
This work, based on personal experiences and memories, captures the different sounds and life stories of each household. It offers viewers the opportunity to recognize the diversity of life within the same space and to listen to the unique sounds of each individual's life.
